Thru Infected blood and blood products</div><div>>this can be thru blood transfusion, organ transplantation or thru sharing of contaminated needles.</div><div><br /></div><div>2. Thru unprotected penetrative sexual intercourse</div><div>>penetrative means "to get in" and all of these 3 modes have risk of transmitting the infection although they vary in the degree of infecting probability</div><div><br /></div><div>a. Oral - lowest risk of acquiring the infection. The oral giver (sucker) has higher risk than the receiver (the one being sucked) of getting infected. Contrary to what others say, Oral sex may be a mode of infection although it pose a very little risk. But we must remember, a risk is still a risk no matter how little it is.</div><div><br /></div><div>b. Vaginal - women have higher risk of acquiring the infection than their partner, but the male partner has risk of having it too.</div><div><br /></div><div>c. Anal - The receiver (bottom) have higher risk than the giver (top). Bareback sex is considered high risk since the anus has thinner walls than the vagina, another fact is that it lacks proper lubrication so a very small or micro tear may be an entry point of the virus.</div><div><br /></div><div>3. Infected Parent-to-child Transmission (Mother-to-Child)</div><div>> During pregnancy</div><div>> During delivery</div><div>> Thru breast-feeding</div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>"4"</div><div>The 4 body fluids containing too much concentration of HIV</div><div>1. Blood</div><div>2. Semen (including pre-ejaculate fluid or precum)</div><div>3. Vaginal Secretion</div><div>4. Breast Milk</div><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><div>"5"</div><div>The 5 ways of Preventing Transmission</div><div>A - Abstinence is the best way of preventing HIV transmission</div><div><br /></div><div>B - Be mutually faithful (If you cannot abstain from sex and have a partner, please practice fidelity)</div><div><br /></div><div>C - Consistent and Correct condom use (If you cannot do letter A and cannot resist temptation and cannot practice letter B, protect yourself by using condoms + proper lubricant)</div><div><br /></div><div>D - Do not use drugs! If you do, please do not Inject! But if you inject, Please, Do not share needles! Do not drink too much alcohol, this may impair your sense of judgment.</div><div><br /></div><div>E - Educate yourself. Do not live in the days of folklore or myths. We are in 21st century and we need to be well-informed with correct information.</div><div>Early detection. Knowing one's status is the best way of handling HIV. If you are negative, you'll learn ways on how to be responsible and prevent yourself from acquiring it in the future. If you are positive, you'll be able to start living a healthy and positive life. Remember HIV does not kill, it's the ignorance of the infection that kills people.</div><div><br /></div><div>Aside from the 3-4-5 we must also remember these principles of infection:</div><div>E-S-S-E</div><div>E-xit, a fluid (remember the 4?) should exit an infected person's body</div><div><br /></div><div>S-ufficiency the amount of the fluid and the virus in the fluid should be sufficient enough to cause infection</div><div><br /></div><div>S-urvival, the virus should be able to survive in order to cause infection, there should be no extreme changes in temperature, moisture, acidity of its environment, they should not be exposed to air in order for it to survive (that's why penetrative sex and blood transfusion or sharing injecting needles are effective modes of transmission).</div><div><br /></div><div>E-ntry There should be an entry point in the body of the other person, a very little opening can be an entrance of the virus, thus causing HIV Infection.</div><div><br /></div><div>HIV Infection is the successful entry of HIV in the body.</div><div><br /></div><div>Reminders:</div><div>1. The internet is a great tool of providing us potent information. however, we must choose things to believe in. If possible, consult a doctor or HIV counselors personally regarding your HIV concerns. Remember, only HIV screening can detect the presence of HIV antibodies in the blood. You may have several symptoms that almost likely are related to HIV but please bear in mind that only HIV Testing can clear your mind of doubts. NEVER believe hearsays...</div><div><br /></div><div>2. If somebody comes out NR/ Non-Reactive, He/She is reminded of the 3 weeks to 6 months window period which is the average length of time for the body to produce specific antibody to HIV. The HIV Antibody is the determining factor for the presence of HIV infection. He/She is then reminded to come back after 3mos and 6 mos for the completion of the "window period" and that every encounter within this period SHOULD all be protected.</div><div><br /></div><div>3. Another thing is that, we have The Republic Act 8504 otherwise known as the Philippine AIDS Prevention and Control Act of 1998 in case you have an issue with the confidentiality of the testing, or any other concerns regarding HIV, this is the best guide you should look into.</div><div><br /></div><div>Your worries will bring you no good. It will make you look sick eventhough you are supposed to be healthy. Remember our mind is so powerful. What you think this very moment, most of the times happens in a matter of days, weeks, or months. There is nothing you could do to ease yourself of the burden of paranoia. Face your fears, better soon than sorry. Have yourself tested and free your mind of worries.... hope to see you soon!!!</div><div><br /></div><div>Thanks,</div><div><br /></div><div>AIDAN</div>Aidan Chosenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05349717514236455079noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4567652364818936327.post-71619566124471005392011-02-05T23:29:00.001+08:002011-02-05T23:31:02.219+08:00Just a thought...<span class="Apple-style-span" ><p> It all begins with awareness. The Conclusion of our 2-month long program set in the "Orosa-Nakpil, Malate" area.<br />The setting reminds me so much of the book (title mentioned above), while the book's author, my friend, Doc Louiemar Gangcuangco, is the brain behind the project. He personally shed out a bunch of fortune just to make this dream project turn into reality.<br /><br />We started on the 2nd week of November and we were so surprised with the turnout of people who are willing to participate in the survey and be tested. Although most of the times we were flocked by skeptics who keep on pulling our possible participants, the sincerest convincing power of our volunteers have outshone their selfish motives.<br /><br />385 was the target number of MSMs that the team needs to gather in order to complete the project. It was quite a large number considering the fact that we just had the IHBSS (Integrated HIV Behavioral and Serologic Survey) 2 months prior to this project and 1 thought in mind that makes us think deeply is the possible saturation of participants. Since we targetted 300 last August-September, the reality of having a slow output is not at all impossible. Although this was the case, We were surprised with the performance the team have shown and we have finished the survey way ahead the target date.<br /><br />Most men who participated shared their concerns of wanting to be involved in the advocacy in continuing the information dissemination regarding HIV and AIDS. A project like this is indeed a big help to the Department of Health and other concerned organizations. Thus, I suggest that it should be a continuous program that will be delivered to the most-at-risk community. The availability of such testing gives everyone an equal opportunity and an easy access to know their HIV status. Some people who tested NR (Non-Reactive/Negative) have vowed to commit themselves in helping us spread the words. I am grateful that this project has created a great impact in the minds and hearts of every Men in the Malate area. People who turned out Reactive to the tests were asked to undergo another blood extraction for confirmatory. We are extremely thankful they were all cooperative and never had second thoughts of submitting to the confirmatory test.<br /><br />Overall, I see the project as a huge success. Although it made me sad thinking that infected Men in that area is increasing rapidly (as fast as our rapid testing kit results), the possibility of them infecting other people has been pretty much reduced (well that is my belief...). One reason is that they are reminded that since they "might be" infected, a big thing to do is protect themselves from other infections by using "protection" (if they cannot practice abstinence or mutual faithfulness, consistent condom use is a MUST). Most of the men who turned out positive in the confirmatory testing were already referred to facilities that can address their health concerns. They are in continuous communication with Doc Louie for guidance. Some people who turned out negative have been communicating with me for possible tie-ups with their events, and for their involvement in our upcoming activities.<br /><br />Orosa-Nakpil, Malate, the cradle of MSMs of the metro, is still a place for FUN, but now fun has a different meaning. It is not just mere happiness or plain enjoyment, instead FUN is now a responsible way of being happy. HIV and AIDS is around, we should do our share in preventing the spread. People Living With HIV/AIDS deserve to be happy like everyone of us. They have the right to roam around the area and enjoy like everyone else. The only thing that we can do is to "PROTECT OURSELVES".<br /><br />The HIV Rapid Testing does not end with the conclusion of the project of Doc Louie. The Global Fund through the DOH, AIDS Society of the Philippines and the LGUs in Metro Manila is giving out the service continuously as long as the Rapid Testing Kits are available. For more information on the free testing or if you want to be scheduled for screening, let us know. And a familiar place in mind to fish out MSMs who are more than willing to be tested for HIV is the "MALATE AREA".<br /><br />Most people might not be aware that they are already infected, and that they are prone to a more complicated situation... that is having the HIV infection, passing it to other uninfected individual thru casual unprotected or unsafe sexual practices, thru sharing injecing needles, thru sharing sex partners, or simply sharing somebody elses infection like gonorrhea, syphilis, herpes, Hepatitis B, tuberculosis, pneumonia and other infections that maybe passed on thru sexual contact or thru casual contact. One-night-stand, a casual sex encounter commonly practiced in that area makes one vulnerable to contracting HIV or any Sexually Transmitted Infections. The project of my friend (I'd rather not mention his name since I haven't asked for a permission yet) becomes an alarming picture of the reality of the "nightlife" in the so called "MSM district of manila". As a volunteer member of the team, and as a member of the Social Hygiene Clinic of Manila, I see this as a positive intervention of creating awareness that indeed HIV is just around. Although it makes me so sad learning that a large portion of the MSM population in that area is already infected, it inspires me at the same time of planning for the next step on how to help halt the increasing number of infections. The Department of Health might have some more important programs to prioritize, but I, as a member of the MSM community, know that I can do something about the situation.<br /><br />25 years ago, we were shocked by the news that HIV has already arrived to the Philippines. But it never came into our minds that today it will be a major issue that the Health Department has to face. What's so alarming about the situation? It is the domino effect of infection involving the younger population of our country, the youth who will be the adult population in the future, may no longer be able to see his own future. As I see it, MSMs in the malate area has been a "victim of ignorance" regarding the HIV situation in the country. Others don't care at all. But remember, lack of information leads everyone to danger.<br /><br />Three months ago, The DOH-NEC led Integrated Behavioral and Serologic Surveillance was conducted nationwide and that includes the City of Manila. And the same area was one of our favorite sites to visit. The IHBSS has opened our eyes to the fact that indeed, the HIV epidemic is looming in the entertaiment districts of the Metro, As reported by no less than the secretary of Health, the prevalence in Manila (a newbie site for the IHBSS project) is 3.67% of the total MSM population, that is 11 HIV positive cases out of 300 who participated in the survey. The National Goal is to at least maintain a <1% prevalence among the most-at-risk population and that includes the youth, Men having sex with men (MSMs), Female Freelance Sex workers (FSWs), their clients, OFWs, their families, clients of Sex workers, etc.<br /><br />Indeed, HIV is not just the DOH's concern. It's everyone's problem to face. If you love yourself or your family, or the people around you, Have yourself or have them tested. Nothing will determine the presence of the HIV infection unless somebody gets tested. It is the only tool to know your HIV status. Remember, an HIV positive person can be as Healthy-looking like us... sometimes they can even look better than most of us. The reliability of the testing kits should not be questioned since it is 99% accurate as the ELISA or the Serodia test. However, results are a lot quicker than the latter 2 tests. If the result happens to be positive, an extraction of the whole blood sample will be requested from the patient to be submitted for confirmation to SACCL. The sample will then undergo 3 tests, ELISA, Serodia and the Western Blot for confirmation.<br /><br />The procedure will be the same, as the person will undergo HIV 101, pre-test counselling, extraction, post-test counselling and referral to treatment hub (if found out positive). thus, the RT does not compromise the original design of Voluntary Confidential Counselling and Testing.<br /><br />Curious about the confidentiality of the testing? Worry not, because the Philippine Law specifically the Republic Act 8504 or known as the Philippine AIDS Prevention and Control Act of 1998, states that:<br /><br />"Article 1, SECTION 18. Anonymous HIV Testing - The State shall provide a mechanism for anonymous HIV testing and shall guarantee anonymous HIV testing and shall guarantee anonymity and medical confidentiality in the conduct of such test.."<br /><br />and is further assured in this portion...<br /><br />"ARTICLE VI CONFIDENTIALITY<br />SECTION 30. Medical Confidentiality - All health professional, medical instructions, workers, employers, recruitment agencies, insurance companies, data encoders, and other custodians of any medical record, file, data, or test results as directed to strictly observe confidentiality in the handling of all medical information, particularly the identity and status of persons with HIV.<br /><br />So if you Guys will be Interested on this Rapid Testing or If you have any questions or concerns...
